How to Play Blackjack Like a Pro

Just like a carpenter needs to be familiar with his tools, a blackjack player needs to be familiar with the blackjack table before he can win big.

Blackjack Game Table

Even though it has been around for ages, the blackjack table is still one of the most popular casino games today. Pause for a second and make sure you’re familiar with the layout of the blackjack table and what you’re looking at before diving in headfirst.

With the curved side facing out and chairs arranged around it, the blackjack table has the form of a half-oval. The number of players allowed at a blackjack table varies from casino to casino, but it is always between five and seven, and the number of seats at the table is directly proportional to the number of player places in the curve area of the table. Blackjack is a game where the dealer controls the straight edge of the table. While the players sit on high stools or can choose to do so, the dealer remains seated at all times and never leaves his side of the table. The pit is the only area where employees of the casino are allowed to enter.

The dealer will place cash into the money slot next to the chip rack, which contains chips of various denominations, when players purchase chips from the dealer. The chip rack is situated directly in front of the dealer.

Another common sight is the shoe, a rectangular container used for playing cards. No shoe is necessary when playing on a single deck table. Aside from that, the only thing you’ll see atop the table will be a little sign indicating the minimum bets for that particular table.

All that remains to be explained are the marks on the table. Each player has his own designated spot on the felt where he may set his betting chips. These spots are closest to the players. Put the chips that aren’t for betting in front of him. Several rules of the game are posted above this, facing the dealer, following the curve of the table. “Dealer Must Draw to 16, and Stand on All 17s” is the most widely written version here, however “Insurance Pays 2-1” or “Blackjack Pays 3-2” are alternate possibilities. Because everyone at the table has to know these rules, we made them a permanent part of the table.

Not much else can be found on a blackjack table than a drinks nook or, depending on your location, an ashtray. Any discrepancies will be minor tweaks to an existing design, such as an alternate set of printed rules or an altered quantity of player spaces. At this point, though, you should be well-versed with the blackjack table arrangement; the ball is in your court; have fun!
